Post Partum Info/Resources

WHAT IS POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION:

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a severe mood disorder that causes mothers to have feelings of intense sadness, worry, exhaustion, worthlessness, and even anger after their new baby is born. Sometimes confused with “baby blues,” postpartum depression affects almost 15% of women after childbirth.

SYMPTOMS FOR POSTPARTUM:

Recognized as perinatal depression or postnatal depression, approximately 1 in 8 new mothers encounter varying degrees of postpartum depression (PPD) within the first year after childbirth.

These symptoms may include:

  • Difficulties sleeping
  • Mood swings
  • Experiencing intense feelings of sadness, anger, or worthlessness,
  • Depression and thoughts of self-harm.

TREATMENT FOR POSTPARTUM:

Treatment for postpartum depression typically involves therapy sessions with a mental health professional,  as well as the use of prescription medications like antidepressants, which are often combined with therapy.

Additionally, postpartum depression recovery should encompass adopting healthy lifestyle practices. Mothers experiencing PPD can support their well-being by:

– prioritizing adequate rest
– staying hydrated
– maintaining a balanced diet
– abstaining from alcohol
– engaging in regular physical activity such as walking or swimming.
